Dr. Shondel Nero

Biography

Shondel Nero is a Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at NYU Steinhardt. An applied linguist and critical discourse analyst, her research focuses on the language education of students who speak vernacular varieties of English, World Englishes, and Creoles. A native of Guyana, Dr. Nero has extensively studied the linguistic educational experiences of speakers of Caribbean Creole English and related issues of language identity and education policy. She has authored four books and published in prominent peer-reviewed journals such as TESOL Quarterly, Linguistics Education, World Englishes, and Language Policy. She was the inaugural recipient of the James E. Alatis Prize in 2016 for her outstanding article on language policy planning in educational contexts, informed by her work as a Fulbright scholar in Jamaica. Dr. Nero is a recipient of the Distinguished Guyanese Linguist Award from the Society for Caribbean Linguistics (2024). In addition to her research, she directs a study-abroad program in the Dominican Republic aimed at developing teachers' intercultural competence and culturally responsive pedagogy. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) and serves as an Associate Editor for TESOL Journal.
