Shuang Liu graduated with a Ph.D. in 1990 from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia and worked for nine years in industrial research at the DuPont Medical Imaging Division, now known as Lantheus Medical Imaging Inc. In 2002, he joined Purdue University as an Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences, later becoming a full professor. Liu is a leader in the application of radiolabeled multimeric RGD peptides as radiotracers for non-invasive imaging of integrin αvβ3 expression in rapidly growing metastatic tumors. His evaluations include over 30 radiotracers in tumor-bearing animal models, with 99mTc-3P-RGD2 being selected for clinical evaluation. His clinical data clearly indicate that 99mTc-3P-RGD2 is useful for diagnosing primary tumors including breast, esophagus, head & neck, lung, and melanoma, as well as small metastatic lesions in breast cancer patients.
