Biography

Shuhei Ono is a geochemist focused on stable isotope geochemistry and microbiology. His research investigates how microbes catalyze chemical reactions and their impact on the chemistry of the atmosphere and oceans. The Ono laboratory has made significant contributions to understanding the early evolution of atmospheric oxygen using stable sulfur isotopes and developed novel tools to pinpoint the origin of methane, a long-lived greenhouse gas critical for biosignature detection in space exploration. His approach combines theoretical, experimental, and observational studies, utilizing stable isotopes as versatile tools to tackle important questions in Earth sciences across a wide range of geochemical problems, from low- to high-temperature geochemistry. Ono holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from Waseda University, Tokyo, and a PhD in Geochemistry from Pennsylvania State University, awarded in 2001. After completing postdoctoral research at the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, he joined the Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) faculty at MIT in 2007.
