Dr. Shukti Chakravarti

Biography

Shukti Chakravarti is a Professor of Ophthalmology and Pathology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She is also the Director of Basic Science Research in Ophthalmology. Her research group is focused on understanding how the extracellular matrix (ECM) regulates cellular functions and tissue homeostasis. They utilize cell cultures and mouse models to gain insights into the roles of neutrophils, macrophages, and dendritic cells in the context of bacterial and viral infections. Additionally, Dr. Chakravarti explores the changes in the ECM that underlie the genetic causes of corneal diseases. She has over three decades of experience in the field, having worked at prestigious institutions such as Case Western Reserve University and Johns Hopkins University before her current tenure at NYU. Her academic credentials include a Doctorate in Extracellular Matrix Biology from the University of Pittsburgh. Throughout her career, she has contributed significantly to the understanding of ECM protein functions in innate and adaptive immunity, corneal inflammation, wound healing, and anterior eye diseases.
