Dr. Shun Ichiro Karato

Biography

Shun Karato is a Professor in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences at Yale University. His research focuses on the physical and chemical properties of materials under deep Earth conditions, particularly how these properties influence the dynamics and evolution of Earth and terrestrial planets. His work emphasizes high-pressure experimental studies that have yielded significant discoveries regarding material behavior under extreme conditions. His facilities enable research at pressures of approximately 25 GPa and temperatures up to 3000 K, allowing him to replicate conditions of the Earth’s mantle. He collaborates with geologists, geodynamicists, seismologists, and geochemists to gain insights into terrestrial evolution through material properties. His group utilizes advanced techniques such as scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectrometry to analyze microstructures and water contents in samples, contributing to a deeper understanding of the Earth’s geophysical processes.
