Biography

Shuping Tong is a Professor of Medicine at the Liver Research Center of Rhode Island Hospital, affiliated with Brown University. He earned his MD from Shanghai Medical University in China in 1983, and went on to obtain a PhD from Claude Bernard University in Lyon, France in 1992. His postdoctoral training was completed at Harvard Medical School from 1993 to 1999. Tong's research focuses on hepatitis B virus (HBV), specifically its genotypes and the mutations that occur naturally within their genome. He investigates the biological consequences of these viral genetic variabilities, particularly those mutations related to liver cancer development. His work has significant implications, considering HBV chronically infects over 400 million people worldwide, with chronic infections leading to serious conditions like viral hepatitis and cirrhosis. His experimental approaches include cloning full-length HBV genomes from patient sera, analyzing protein expression, and studying genome replication and virion secretion. Tong has been awarded multiple grants, including the American Cancer Society Research Scholar Award and has played key roles as both principal investigator and co-investigator in several NIH-funded projects. Throughout his career, he has published extensively, contributing to our understanding of HBV and its pathogenesis.
