Biography

Shuwen Yue joined the Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in the Summer of 2023. He received a dual B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from the University of Alabama in 2016. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Princeton University in 2021, where he worked on developing machine learning potentials for molecular fluids under the guidance of Athanassios Z. Panagiotopoulos. Following his doctoral studies, Shuwen conducted postdoctoral research in the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT, focusing on machine learning for materials under the mentorship of Heather J. Kulik. His research group investigates how the chemistry of individual molecules—encompassing their structure, charges, and interactions—translates to large-scale behaviors observed in liquids, mixtures, and materials. They aim to understand and control how molecules interact in condensed phases to design systems with tailored properties. His work incorporates physics-based and data-driven approaches to guide the bottom-up design of electrolytes, interfaces, and catalytic environments, targeting improved control over phase behavior and chemical reactivity. Shuwen's expertise is grounded in statistical mechanics, molecular simulations, artificial intelligence/machine learning, and aims to advance catalysis, energy storage, and sustainable chemistry.
