Biography

Shyam S. Krishnakumar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at Yale University School of Medicine. He received his M.S. in Biotechnology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry with a focus on Structural Biology from Stony Brook University, NY. His doctoral research centered around key discoveries related to the structure and function of transmembrane proteins, which are critical for understanding cellular processes. Subsequently, Dr. Krishnakumar worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the lab of Nobel Laureate James E. Rothman, where he investigated the molecular regulation of synaptic vesicle fusion. As a Senior Research Scientist, he directed research efforts aimed at dissecting the molecular organization of vesicle release sites at presynaptic terminals. His research interests focus on the molecular mechanisms underlying neurotransmitter release and the alterations that can result in various neurological disorders. Dr. Krishnakumar employs a range of multidisciplinary approaches including biochemical, biophysical, and structural methods to uncover the mechanistic basis of neurotransmitter release and its implications in psychiatric conditions. His laboratory is dedicated to elucidating the complex interplay of molecular factors that govern synaptic transmission.
