Biography

Si Yoon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at New York University Steinhardt. He received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2016. His research employs a cognitive science approach to studying complex language processes, focusing on how individuals utilize social-pragmatic information during conversations. He examines how speakers tailor their language based on their conversational partner's prior knowledge and previously discussed information, which influences both language production and comprehension in the moment. Yoon's interest lies in understanding the ability to use social-pragmatic cues in language processing, particularly how this ability varies among different populations, including adults with and without severe memory impairments, as seen in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. His research theme revolves around the cognitive mechanisms that underpin natural conversation and the role of memory representations in supporting natural language use. His work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health. Prior to joining NYU, Yoon served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa from 2019 to 2023.
