Sian Smith is currently an Honorary Research Fellow at the Prince of Wales Clinical School, University of New South Wales. She held an NHMRC Early Career Research Fellowship from 2012 to 2016 and is the Deputy Director of the Psychosocial Research Group. After permanently relocating to the UK in 2016, she continues to engage in Australian international research collaborations, particularly in student supervision. Dr. Smith's research interests are centered around health literacy and patient communication, with a focus on shared decision-making, especially among vulnerable and socially disadvantaged populations. Over the past decade, she has been involved in the development and evaluation of various shared decision-making interventions, including decision aid booklets and health literacy programs targeting clinical community settings for bowel and breast cancer screening. Her current projects include developing decision aids to assist couples in making informed choices regarding prenatal genetic testing and online resources for young women with early breast cancer. Sian has been recognized for her contributions to research with awards such as the UNSW Medicine Dean's Rising Star Award and the Translational Cancer Research Network’s Cancer Challenge Year Award. She also leads a large ARC Grant-funded study focusing on innovative health literacy training interventions.
