Dr. Sibel Irmak

Biography

Sibel Irmak is a research professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Penn State University. She specializes in chemical and thermochemical conversions of lignocellulosic biomass and its byproducts, aiming to develop value-added products, including platform chemicals and hydrogen gas. Irmak's research focuses on developing catalysts for conversion processes utilizing nanotechnology, as well as formulating degradable biofilms for agricultural applications. Her work also includes advanced oxidation processes to degrade toxic organic chemicals in wastewaters and the depolymerization of biomass. Irmak has held multiple academic positions, including adjunct research professor and research associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she contributed significantly to the fields of food science and biological systems engineering. She has published extensively and is a member of various professional societies such as the American Society of Agricultural Biological Engineers and the American Chemical Society. Irmak earned her B.S. and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Cukurova University in Turkey.
