Biography

Siegfried Hecker is a Professor (Research) in the Department of Management Science and Engineering and a senior fellow at the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He is an emeritus director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he also served as co-director of CISAC from 2007 to 2012. His notable research interests encompass plutonium science, nuclear weapons policy, international security, nuclear security including nonproliferation and counter-terrorism, and cooperative nuclear threat reduction. Over the past 22 years, Hecker has played a pivotal role in fostering cooperation among Russian nuclear laboratories to secure and safeguard the vast stockpiles of ex-Soviet fissile materials. His current research focuses on the nuclear challenges presented by India, Pakistan, North Korea, and Iran’s nuclear aspirations. In addition to his academic career, Hecker has received numerous professional distinctions, including being a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of several prestigious societies. He has received various awards such as the Presidential Enrico Fermi Award and the E.O. Lawrence Award from the U.S. Department of Energy.
