Professor Dr. Sigan Hartley

Biography

Sigan Hartley is a Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the Department of Human Development & Family Studies, holding the 100 Women Distinguished Chair. Her research primarily focuses on promoting health and well-being in individuals with developmental disabilities and their families throughout the life course. She investigates the factors influencing the health of children and adults with developmental disabilities, particularly in relation to autism spectrum disorders and fragile X syndrome. Hartley's methodology is multifaceted, employing tools such as daily diaries, medical and public record reviews, observational coding systems, physiological measures, and biological markers, utilizing a range of analytic approaches including multilevel longitudinal modeling and survival analyses. Her extensive research body includes numerous publications emphasizing the intersection of family dynamics, environmental contexts, and support services related to developmental disabilities. She is actively involved in promoting understanding and solutions that enhance the lives of those affected by these challenges, making her work critical in the fields of human ecology and developmental psychology.
