Professor Dr. Sikata Banerjee

Biography

Sikata Banerjee is a Professor in Gender Studies at the University of Victoria, where she has been a faculty member since 2000. With a PhD in Political Science from the University of Washington obtained in 1996, her area of expertise lies in Indian politics, nationalism, and masculinities. Her scholarship critically examines gender, focusing especially on the nuances of masculinities against the backdrop of Indian nationalism. Banerjee’s research highlights the dynamic interplay between masculinities and femininities, particularly in the context of contemporary India. This exploration includes fieldwork in Mumbai and New Delhi, where she investigates the emergence of Hindu nationalism and its implications for masculinity. Her work, which has received funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Rockefeller Foundation, has led to numerous publications, including significant works on gender and nationalism in India. Among her courses are GNDR 300 and GNDR 301, which delve into gender studies and the intersections of race and empire.
