Biography

Professor Silke Gillessen is a Medical Oncologist specializing in genitourinary (GU) cancers. She completed her training at institutions including Basel, St. Gallen, and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Upon returning to Switzerland, she built a medical oncology unit focused on genitourinary cancer at the Cantonal Hospital in St. Gallen and led the Clinical Research Department. In 2018, Professor Gillessen was appointed the Genitourinary Cancer Systemic Therapy Research Chair at the University of Manchester while serving as an Honorary Consultant at The Christie Hospital. She currently holds an Honorary Professorship at the University of Manchester and is a member of the Scientific Committee for the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) guidelines and a panellist for the European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines on prostate cancer. In January 2020, she was appointed Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at USI and serves as the Director at the Institute of Oncology in Southern Switzerland (IOSI) based in Lugano and Bellinzona. Her research focuses on precision oncology and novel treatments for prostate, testicular, and penile cancers, particularly addressing the challenges posed by metastatic prostate cancer.
