Dr. Silke Heumann

Biography

Silke Heumann is an Assistant Professor at the International Institute of Social Studies, part of Erasmus University Rotterdam, specializing in Social Justice Perspectives. She completed her MA with honors in 2003 and obtained her PhD in 2010 from the University of Amsterdam. Her research interests encompass Gender Sexuality Studies, Social Movements, Latin American Politics, and Discourse Analysis. Heumann has taught various programs at the University of Amsterdam covering Sociology and Gender Sexuality Studies, integrating interdisciplinary approaches that emphasize intersectionality and power relations. Her fieldwork includes extensive involvement in Nicaragua throughout the 1990s, focusing on sexual reproductive health rights and gender-based violence. Her research project on 'Sexual Politics in Regime Transition Nicaragua' offers critical insights into gender and sexuality debates post-revolution. Heumann's recent collaborative efforts highlight the adverse conditions of sex workers, emphasizing the impact of anti-trafficking discourses on their rights and working conditions. She is an active member of several research initiatives, reflecting her commitment to social justice and civic innovation.
