Biography

Silvia Bulfone-Paus is an Italian immunologist whose research focuses on the role of mast cells in tissue homeostasis and pathogenesis. She graduated with a degree in Medicine from the University of Turin in 1989 and completed her PhD in Genetics at Yale University in 1994. Following her studies, she held academic positions at Freie Universität Berlin's Institute of Immunology, where she was a senior scientist starting in 1994 and advanced to become Deputy Director in 1996 and Assistant Professor in 1999. In 2000, she was appointed as a Full Professor at the University of Lübeck and served as the Director of the Department of Immunology and Cell Biology at the Research Centre Borstel. From 2006 to 2008, she acted as the Managing Director of the Centre. Since 2013, she has been a member of the Division of Musculoskeletal and Dermatological Sciences at the University of Manchester's Manchester Collaborative Centre for Inflammation Research. Her research interests particularly focus on mast cells, which are crucial in mediating allergy responses, autoimmunity, and inflammation, and the associated protective immune responses.
