Biography

Silvia Margot Lindtner is a Professor at the University of Michigan in the School of Information and the Director of the Center for Ethics, Society, Computing (ESC). She conducts fieldwork in China, contributing to the social cultural study of technology. Her recent work includes the award-winning book 'Prototype Nation: China Contested Promise Innovation' published by Princeton University Press in 2020, and she is a co-author of 'Technoprecarious' with Goldsmiths/MIT Press also in 2020. Lindtner is affiliated with various interdisciplinary centers at her university including the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies and the Digital Studies Institute, and she leads the Tech.Culture.Matters research group. She served as a Visiting Associate Professor at NYU Shanghai from 2021 to 2024 and held fellowships with the China-US Scholars Program and the Public Intellectuals Program. Her research has been supported by institutions such as the National Science Foundation and Intel Labs, and her publications have appeared in notable journals and conferences including ACM SIGCHI and Women’s Studies Quarterly.
