Biography

Silvia S. Martins, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, where she also serves as the Vice Dean for Faculty. She directs the Substance Use Epidemiology Unit and co-directs the NIH-funded T32 Substance Abuse Epidemiology Training Program. With over 320 peer-reviewed articles, her research primarily focuses on substance use epidemiology, particularly the impact of prescription drug monitoring programs and opioid policies on overdose rates. Dr. Martins' excellence in research and mentoring has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2021 Columbia University Irving Medical Center Mentor of the Year Award and the 2017 Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentoring from the Mailman School. She is continuously funded by NIH since 2006 as a Principal Investigator, actively contributing to an understanding of substance use impacts among adolescents and adults, especially in high-risk populations. Currently, her research examines the implications of cannabis laws in the U.S. and trends in drug overdoses in Latin America.
