Biography

Silvia Mihaila obtained her bachelor's degree in chemistry and physics in Romania. She pursued her PhD at the University of Minho in Portugal through the prestigious MIT-Portugal Program, focusing on strategies for bone vascularization, which she completed in 2015. Following her PhD, she continued her academic trajectory as a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Urology at Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, Netherlands, where she worked on synthetic biomimetic matrices to enhance the differentiation potential of stem cells. In 2017, she joined UMC Utrecht to embark on a project related to the development of a bioartificial kidney unit based on bioengineered hollow membranes. In March 2021, Silvia became an assistant professor, specializing in in vitro models of disease within the Department of Pharmacology at Utrecht University. Her research aims to develop humanized in vitro models that replicate the pathological complications associated with kidney injury and failure, with the goal of unraveling the mechanisms of disease and identifying potential therapeutic targets.
