Silvia Santa Maria Newell is a Professor at the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability and serves as the Director of Michigan Sea Grant. Her research as a nutrient biogeochemist and microbial ecologist focuses on the effects of excess nutrients from fertilizers and wastewater in inland and coastal waters, particularly harmful algal blooms (HABs).
