Biography

Silvia Vilarinho is a physician-scientist who utilizes genetics and genomics of human samples to investigate the molecular basis of liver diseases of unknown etiology. Her research has identified five novel genetic liver diseases, and her ultimate goal is to discover new genes that are important for liver function and health. This research is coupled with cell biology and animal models to determine the mechanisms linking mutant genes to diseases, thereby creating a roadmap for understanding and treating both rare and common liver diseases. Vilarinho's research approach not only develops new knowledge but also directly impacts improved patient care and fosters an outstanding scientific environment for training future physician-scientists. She is particularly focused on making genomic medicine for liver disease a reality in clinical practice worldwide.
