Biography

Silvina Montrul is a professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois. Born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, she completed her undergraduate education in her home country before earning a Master's degree in English from the University of Cincinnati and a PhD in Linguistics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Montage has been a faculty member at SUNY-Albany before joining the University of Illinois in 1999. She teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in Spanish and English, focusing on Spanish Linguistics. Montrul served as the Department Head of Spanish, Italian & Portuguese from 2010 to 2013 and again as the Head of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese from 2015 to 2016. In 2010, she founded the University Language Academy, which offers a summer camp Spanish program for children aged 4-16. Her research interests are centered on second language acquisition, bilingualism, and heritage language acquisition, employing psycholinguistic methodologies to explore interlanguage and bilingual grammars.
