Dr. Silvio Brugger

Biography

Silvio Brugger is a Senior Attending Physician in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology at the University Hospital Zurich. His clinical specialties include bacterial infections, particularly in the respiratory tract, chronic infections within the ORL area, and infections in immunodeficiency patients, such as those with hyper-IgE syndrome. He has extensive experience in hospital hygiene and microbiological diagnostics. Silvio completed his medical studies at the University of Bern and has undertaken significant postdoctoral training, including a visiting scientist role at the Forsyth Institute connected to Harvard Medical School. He has authored various scientific publications and is a member of several professional associations, including the American Society of Microbiology and the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. His research focuses on microbiome interactions, specifically within the respiratory tract, the dynamics of commensal-pathogen interactions, and the intricate roles of pneumococcal and staphylococcal infections. Silvio is continuously active in research and clinical settings and contributes to educating future physicians through his role as a lecturer at ETH Zurich.
