Biography

Simon Avenell is a Professor at the School of Culture, History, Language within the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific. His research specializes in modern Japanese history with a focus on the postwar period (1945 and onwards), civic activism, civil society, social history, and political history. Dr. Avenell has an extensive academic background, having completed his PhD in History at the University of California at Berkeley in 2003. Throughout his career, he has contributed significantly to the understanding of Japan's civic movements and societal transformations. Avenell engages in supervision of research students and actively participates in various collaborative research projects.
