Simon Buczacki graduated as a double Exhibitioner in Medicine from the University of Cambridge in 2000. He completed basic higher surgical training at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and in 2009, he undertook a PhD in Oncology under the supervision of Professor Doug Winton at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute. His doctoral thesis focused on the nature of quiescent intestinal stem cells, addressing a long-standing question in the field. Simon received a post-doctoral CRUK Clinician Scientist Fellowship to establish his own research group. His research has concentrated on targeting quiescent colorectal cancer stem cells, where he successfully repurposed a drug to achieve this aim. In 2015, he was appointed as an honorary consultant colorectal surgeon at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust and led the Aerodigestive programme at the Cambridge Cancer Centre until 2020. During this time, he was a Fellow and College Lecturer in Anatomy at Clare College. In 2018, Simon became the Group Leader at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute and was awarded the CRUK/RCSEng Advanced Clinician Scientist Fellowship. In 2020, he was appointed the inaugural Richard Blackwell Pharsalia Professor of Colorectal Surgery at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford. His research aims to understand how colorectal cancers evolve and the implications of tumor heterogeneity for improving therapeutic strategies.
