Biography

Simon Coleman is a Chancellor Jackman Professor in the Department of the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto. He joined the University of Toronto in 2010, coming from the University of Sussex where he was Head of the Department of Anthropology. His previous roles include Reader in Anthropology at the University of Durham and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Health at Durham. Coleman earned his undergraduate degree and PhD from the University of Cambridge. He has served as President of the Society for the Anthropology of Religion from 2017 to 2019 and is currently co-editor of the journal Religion and the Society: Advances in Research book series by Routledge, focusing on pilgrimage, religious travel, and tourism. Coleman has carried out extensive fieldwork in various locations including Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria. He contributed to significant works such as 'Anthropology of Global Pentecostalism and Evangelicalism' and 'Powers of Pilgrimage: Religion in Motion', published by New York University Press. In 2024, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada for his pioneering work in the development of anthropology and the study of Christian religious expressions in urban contexts.
