Dr. Simon Devereaux

Biography

Simon Devereaux is a Professor at the University of Victoria, where he serves as the Undergraduate Advisor in the Department of History. He specializes in Early Modern British History, Criminal Justice, and Political Constitutional History. Raised in Nepean, Ontario, he earned his BA in History and Political Science from the University of Toronto in 1989, followed by an MA in 1990 and a PhD in 1997. He held a Killam Postdoctoral Fellowship at Green College, University of British Columbia, from 1997 to 1999. Before his current role, he was a Lecturer in British History at the University of Queensland, Australia. He has published extensively, including notable works such as 'Execution, State and Society in England, 1660–1900' (2023) and various articles in journals like the 'American Journal of Legal History' and 'Law and History Review.' Devereaux's research interests primarily focus on the historical context of criminal justice practices and societal attitudes towards capital punishment in England during the 18th and 19th centuries. He is also active in teaching courses that explore historical conspiracies, moral panics, and significant transformations in British society from the Glorious Revolution to modern times.
