Biography

Simon M. Hughes is a Professor and MRC Scientist at King's College London. He studied Biochemistry for his PhD under Dr. Martin D. Brand at the University of Cambridge. Following his postdoctoral training with Professor Martin C. Raff at University College London and Professor Helen M. Blau at Stanford University as a Lucille P. Markey Visiting Fellow, he became a group leader at the MRC Muscle Cell Motility Unit in 1992. Prof. Hughes is a member of the MRC External Scientific Staff and has been supported by an MRC Programme Grant since 2002. His laboratory focuses on using molecular genetics, cell biology, and biophysical approaches to study the development, growth, and repair of skeletal and cardiac muscle tissues across various vertebrate models, primarily zebrafish. His current research interests include understanding the etiology and prevention of age-related muscle weakening (sarcopenia), the mechanisms of mechanosensing in muscle growth, muscle stem cell diversity and control, and the treatment of inherited muscle diseases.
