Biography

Simon completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Newcastle and specialist training in Nephrology at The Canberra and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals. He received a Master of Medicine (Honours) from the University of Sydney and his PhD at the Australian National University as a National Health and Medical Research Council/Royal Australasian College of Physicians scholar, investigating the role of genetic variation in systemic lupus erythematosus. His laboratory focuses on the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying systemic autoimmunity and kidney disease. Simon leads a national translational personalised medicine program centered at Canberra Hospital and ANU, investigating complex autoimmunity to identify potential pathogenic gene variants and demonstrating the molecular immune consequences of these variants. He collaborates with the National Centre for Indigenous Genomics using a personalised medicine approach to explore the unique genetic basis of kidney disease in Indigenous Australians.
