Biography

Simon W. M. John, PhD, is the Robert L. Burch III Professor of Ophthalmic Sciences in the Department of Ophthalmology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, as well as a member of the Zuckerman Institute. He is also an adjunct professor at the Jackson Laboratory and the Genetics Program at Tufts University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and an affiliate of the New York Genome Center. Dr. John's research primarily focuses on ocular diseases, particularly glaucoma. He has pioneered the use of mouse models in glaucoma research, adapting clinical tools to develop novel experimental models. His work has significantly advanced mechanistic understandings of glaucoma and contributed to the field of ophthalmology. He holds a B.Sc. with high honors in Zoology and Genetics from University College Cardiff and earned his Ph.D. in Biology with a specialization in Human Genetics from McGill University. Dr. John completed his postdoctoral training at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, under the mentorship of Nobel Laureate Dr. Oliver Smithies, further honing his expertise in complex diseases and experimental models.
