Biography

Simon Lam is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin, having received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1974. He began his career at IBM Research before joining the Department of Computer Science at UT Austin as an Assistant Professor in 1977, where he advanced through the ranks to become a full professor and later retired in 2018. His significant contributions to society include the invention of secure sockets and the prototype implementation of the secure sockets layer (SSL) in 1993, which has become vital for secure internet applications and e-commerce. His work was notably published at the 1994 USENIX Summer Technical Conference. He continued to influence internet security through re-implementations of secure sockets layers (SSL/TLS) using key ideas from his original work, and he has earned numerous accolades, including being elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2007, the ACM Software System Award in 2004, and several lifetime achievement awards in communication networks. He has also been recognized for his teaching excellence by the College of Natural Sciences at UT Austin.
