Biography

Simon Park's research focuses on the history, literature, and visual arts of the Portuguese-speaking world during the Early Modern period. His upcoming book, 'Wreckers: Disaster Age Discovery', challenges the traditional narratives of heroism in exploration by highlighting lesser-known figures and stories associated with the emergence of empires. The book aims to reframe the discourse around imperialism through disaster narratives, contributing to an understanding of the complexities involved in the formation of historical narratives. In addition to writing, he has received the 2020 Juan Facundo Riaño Essay Medal for his study of early Renaissance silverwork in Portugal. Park established the Early Career Network for Modern Linguists at Oxford to support and foster collaboration among academics in language studies. He lectures and tutors on various aspects of Portuguese literature, including medieval and early modern periods, and teaches translation classes. He has also developed new courses exploring visual culture related to narratives of empire.
