Biography

Simon Peacock is a Professor at the University of British Columbia, specializing in the fields of Geochemistry, Geology, and Geophysics. His research primarily focuses on understanding processes occurring in subduction zones, notably those where tectonic plates dive into Earth's mantle, which can trigger significant earthquakes and explosive volcanism. An integral aspect of his work involves the integration of heat-transfer and petrologic models with field seismological observations to gain insight into the processes operating at great depths beneath the Earth's surface. Currently, he is particularly focused on the Cascadia subduction zone located off the west coast of North America, stretching from southern British Columbia to northern California. His studies investigate the role of H2O-rich fluids and hydrous minerals in the seismicity and magmatism within this region. By determining the spatial and temporal distribution of H2O in hydrated rocks, Peacock aims to advance the understanding of plate tectonics while assessing the associated risks of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in the Pacific Northwest.
