Dr. Simon Potter

Biography

Simon J. Potter is a Professor of Modern History at the University of Bristol, specializing in the history of British media, including the BBC and the broader social and cultural history of the British Empire and Commonwealth. He examines the influence of periodical press, radio broadcasting, and television, highlighting connections between the British Empire and mass media during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Potter led the Leverhulme Trust International Research Network, 'Connecting Wireless World: Writing Global Radio History', and has published a centenary history of the BBC with Oxford University Press. His research interests include transnational perspectives on British broadcasting, press freedom, and the role newspapers played in linking different parts of the 'British world'. He is also involved in supervising PhD students at Bristol, encouraging research proposals related to media history and British imperial policy-making.
