Dr. Simon Stern

Biography

Simon Stern is a Professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law with a diverse academic background, holding a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School, a Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Yale College. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Journal of Law & Humanities and clerked for Judge Ronald M. Gould of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Prior to his current position, he practiced litigation at Shea & Gardner in Washington, D.C., and held a prestigious Climenko Fellowship at Harvard Law School. Professor Stern's research interests span across law and literature, legal history, law and sexuality, and criminal law. He has worked on significant projects and research topics such as the 'reasonable man' standard and the evolution of legal fictions. Additionally, he is active in various academic associations, serving as President of the Association for the Study of Law, Culture, and Humanities, and as a co-editor of the Law and Literature series published by Oxford University Press. He is also involved in advising Ph.D. and S.J.D. candidates on dissertations concerning legal history and literature. His research contributions are funded by organizations like the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and the American Society for Legal History.
