Biography

Simon Stjernholm is an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen in the Faculty of Humanities. His research primarily focuses on oral Muslim teaching and preaching, employing empirical material from Denmark and Sweden. Stjernholm has a continuous interest in the study of Sufism and is currently investigating writings of Western Sufi life. As the Principal Investigator of the project 'Rearticulating Islam: New Generation Muslim Religious Leaders', funded by the Velux Foundation, he explored how diverse Muslim actors address Islam in educational, homiletic, and political contexts. His work examines contemporary Sufism, the lived experiences of Muslims in Europe, and the interplay of senses in religious practices. Stjernholm teaches courses in the Study of Religion on historical and theoretical aspects and supervises a range of student research topics. He actively participates in various academic committees and has contributed to numerous publications in the field of Islamic Studies, with a focus on Sufism and religion's sensory aspects.
