Dr. Simon Swain

Biography

Simon Swain is Professor of Classics at the University of Warwick and currently serves as the Vice-President for Regional National Engagement. He has a distinguished academic background, having completed his undergraduate degree at Pembroke College, Oxford from 1980 to 1984, followed by a doctorate on 'Plutarch in Rome' awarded in 1987 from Wolfson College, Oxford. He joined Warwick in 1995 as a postdoctoral fellow and has focused his research on the reception and development of Greek thought during the Islamic Middle Ages, as well as the social and cultural history of the Greek East during the Roman period. He has secured extensive external funding from organizations including AHRC, Leverhulme, Wellcome, and various EU projects. His research interests include the reception of ancient Greek science, pseudoscience in medicine and physiognomy, and economic and political thought. Swain has held several administrative roles at the University, including Head of the Department of Classics and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International). His publications include works on Greek political theory and late antiquity. He is actively involved in postgraduate supervision for MA and PhD students in related fields.
