Biography

Simon Trudel is a Professor and Associate Head in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Calgary, where he is also the Safety Director for the Nanoscience Program. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry with Honours and a Minor in Physics from McGill University in 2003 and went on to obtain his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Simon Fraser University in 2008. Trudel was a founding investigator at the Centre for Advanced Solar Materials and has authored 20 scientific articles focusing on the study of structure-property relationships in advanced nanostructured materials. His postdoctoral work, facilitated by an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship, was conducted under Prof. Dr. Burkard Hillebrands at Technische Universität Kaiserslautern in Germany. At Calgary, he leads a nanomaterials-focused research group, emphasizing the relationship between size and shape in controlled nanostructures. His research interests include non-conventional magnetic materials and their applications, particularly in the context of magnetic catalytic properties and other functionalities of nanoscale materials. He has been recognized with nominations for several awards, including the FoS Early Career Research Award and the Killam Emerging Research Leader Award.
