Dr. Simon Watson

Biography

Simon Watson is a Reader at the University of Manchester, specializing in mobile robots for demanding environments such as the energy sector, including nuclear and offshore applications. His research focuses on designing robotic systems—airborne, aquatic, and terrestrial—that operate in challenging conditions. Watson is also developing design toolchains to facilitate efficient co-design among robots, their missions, and the environments they navigate. He has an extensive background in electrical engineering and robotics, with significant contributions to sustainable development goals, particularly focused on education through his work in the field. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Manchester, completed in 2012, and a Master of Engineering in Mechatronic Engineering from the same institution, earned in 2008. Watson actively engages in various research projects, including the Centre for Robotic Autonomy and has received multiple awards for his contributions to the field of autonomous robotic systems.
