Biography

Simone Browne is an Associate Professor in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research interests primarily focus on surveillance studies, digital media, and black diaspora studies. Browne authored the book 'Dark Matters: Surveillance and Blackness' (Duke University Press, 2015), which examines the intersections of surveillance, transatlantic slavery, biometric technologies, branding, and representation in creative texts. In addition to her academic work, she serves on the Executive Board of HASTAC, a collaborative network dedicated to discussions about technology and the humanities, and is part of Deep Lab, a feminist arts research collective. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology with a specialization in Equity Studies in Education from the University of Toronto, obtained in 2007, and a Master's degree in the same field from the same university in 2001.
