Biography

Simone Thavaseelan, MD, is an Associate Professor of Surgery specializing in Urology at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University. She has been a faculty member since 2011. Thavaseelan completed her medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in 2005, and she finished her urology residency in 2010, followed by a fellowship in Endourology/Minimally Invasive Urology at Brown University in 2011. She currently serves as the Section Chief of Urology at the Providence VA Medical Center and is the Program Director for the Urology residency program at Brown University. Her research interests include graduate medical education (GME) and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in Urology. Thavaseelan has taken on significant leadership roles, including serving on the Graduate Medical Education Committee at Brown/Rhode Island Hospital and as a board member of the Society of Women in Urology. Furthermore, she is involved with various committees within the American Urological Association and has published numerous manuscripts aimed at improving the Urology Match process and addressing diversity in urology training. Thavaseelan is dedicated to promoting an inclusive environment in medical education and has received multiple awards for her teaching excellence and contributions to the field.
