Dr. Sina Blassnig

Biography

Sina Julia Blassnig is a researcher and professor at the University of Fribourg. Her work focuses on journalism, specifically on digital journalism and the influence of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and news recommendation systems. She investigates the innovation in media, users' perceptions of new technologies, and the media logics, including the role of the public in political communication. Her research interests extend to the digital communication strategies of political actors, media coverage of political events, populism, and hate speech. Blassnig is currently involved in significant research projects examining the impacts of generative visual AI in journalism, aiming to characterize AI-generated content and understand media professionals' and audiences' perceptions of it. Through her mixed-methods approach, she intends to contribute to the fields of generative visual AI journalism and visual communication, providing empirical data and insights into the integration of these technologies in Swiss newsrooms. Additionally, her studies address the ethical and practical implications of generative AI in media production and consumption.
