Biography

Siobhan Hearne is a historian specializing in the histories of health, gender, and sexuality, particularly within the contexts of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. She joined the University of Manchester in January 2023 as a Wellcome Trust Research Fellow. She previously held the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at Durham University and the Leverhulme Study Abroad Fellowship at the University of Latvia in Riga. Hearne received her PhD in History from the University of Nottingham in 2017. Her current Wellcome-funded research project explores the history of the Soviet Red Cross, particularly its role in domestic healthcare and its function as a diplomatic tool within global humanitarian networks during the post-Stalin era, from the death of Stalin in 1953 to the collapse of the USSR in 1991. Hearne's work delves into the intertwined nature of state and civil society in the post-Stalin USSR, highlighting the critical role of volunteer work in the Soviet healthcare system. She has published significant research, including the book "Policing Prostitution: Regulating Lower Classes in Late Imperial Russia" (Oxford University Press, 2021), which examines the socio-political aspects of prostitution regulation in the Russian Empire. Hearne is also engaged in a collaborative digital history project titled "Peripheral Histories," aimed at understanding and showcasing the complexities of historical narratives from peripheral spaces.
