Siri Atma W. Greeley, MD, PhD, is an internationally recognized expert in monogenic diabetes. He has been actively involved in patient-oriented outcomes-based clinical research, with a particular focus on neonatal diabetes. Dr. Greeley's work shows that anyone diagnosed with diabetes before six months of age is likely to have an underlying monogenic cause. His studies demonstrate that, in about 50% of cases, babies with mutations in genes encoding KATP channels can switch from intensive insulin injections to reliable glycemic control using only oral sulfonylurea treatment. Alongside various local and international collaborators, he has made significant contributions to the understanding of the monogenic forms of diabetes. As a Chair for the Pediatric Endocrine Society, he led a major international initiative to develop consensus guidelines for the diagnosis and management of congenital forms of diabetes. Dr. Greeley conceived and developed the University of Chicago Monogenic Diabetes Registry, which remains the only registry of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, housing 2500 participants and helping clarify phenotype/genotype correlations and long-term outcomes in patients with rare forms of neonatal diabetes. He has published over 50 articles and received numerous awards for his contributions to diabetes research, including a third-place DMDEA Gold Medal Oration Award and an Early Career Development Award from the Central Society of Clinical and Translational Research.
