Dr. Sirma Bilge

Biography

Sirma Bilge is a Professor at the Université de Montréal, within the Department of Sociology. Her current research interests lie at the intersections of immigration governance and integration policies, examining how they relate to racial and national policies. She explores the normative frameworks and political aspects of gender and sexuality through a critical theoretical lens, incorporating intersectionality, postcolonial and decolonial approaches, Critical Race Theory, and transnational feminist and anti-racist theories. Particularly, she focuses on the entanglements of gender, sexuality, and race policies in the context of contemporary Western nationalisms, with Quebec as a specific case study. Her research critically analyzes how policies and representations affect immigrants from imagined geographies outside the West, including their cultural practices and familial relations, drawing attention to governmental measures targeting these groups and the negative media portrayals that often accompany them. Her work also addresses the current rhetorics of gender and sexuality progressivism amidst collective anxieties and moral panics around immigration.
