Dr. Sj Shen

Biography

Sj Shen is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Microbiome Research Centre, St George Clinical School, focusing on the intricate interactions between host immunity and gut microbiota. His research investigates how alterations in gut microbiota modulate liver inflammation and disease, particularly through understanding the 'gut-liver axis' and its implications for liver inflammation and cancer. Shen's work aims to find ways to modify gut microbiota to prevent or halt the progression of liver cancer. He has a special interest in the role of diet in immune responses and disease progression. Prior to his current role, he trained as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Technology Sydney and the Centenary Institute, exploring microbiota's importance in respiratory diseases. Shen completed his PhD at Monash University in 2019, examining the interplay between gut microbiota and neutrophils in a mouse model of colitis. His research also included an Honours project on the role of dietary fiber and short-chain fatty acids in mouse models of lung inflammation and oesophagitis.
