Dr. Sjef Cobben

Biography

Sjef Cobben is a part-time professor in the Power Quality research group at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His main affiliation is with Alliander, a Dutch grid operator, where he works as a research scientist. Cobben's expertise includes low-voltage and medium-voltage network safety and power quality, with a particular focus on the safety of installations connected to networks. His research theme at TU/e addresses Power Quality, which concerns the quality of voltage and current and their mutual interactions. This area is highly relevant to smart grid technologies, the integration of renewable energy sources, and the compatibility of devices and installations within networks. Current developments in electricity supply pose challenges to the quality of voltage and currents, thereby threatening grid stability and the safety of connected equipment. In addition to his academic work, Cobben founded CO-Education in 2009, a company providing knowledge services and education in the field of electrical engineering, particularly in power quality and smart grids. He received his Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from TU/e in 2002, graduating 'cum laude', and subsequently completed his PhD research part-time at the university, culminating in his 2007 thesis titled 'Power Quality, Implications Point Connection'.
