Biography

Sjoerd Kluiving studied Physical Geography and Geology at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Alabama. He is a geologist and physical geographer focused on applying earth sciences to archaeology and interdisciplinary research, with an emphasis on the Anthropocene. Kluiving is involved in project management, evaluation of archaeological monuments, and has extensive teaching and research experience. He co-leads the newly established Environmental Humanities Center at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and has received funding for various projects including the TERRANOVA project under Horizon 2020. Sjoerd supervises PhD students in landscape archaeology and the interface between archaeology and earth sciences. His work often includes the reconstruction of historical landscapes and cultural heritage assessment. Kluiving has presented numerous PhD and master's theses covering topics from ancient landscapes to the effects of anthropogenic changes on the environment. He is also the President of the IALA Board and actively contributes to education and research in his field.
