Biography

Sky Gilbert is a distinguished teacher, writer, director, and filmmaker, recognized as one of Canada's controversial artistic forces. He co-founded and served as the artistic director of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, North America’s largest LGBTQ theatre, for 18 years, creating critically acclaimed plays that have been performed in theatres worldwide. His notable works include 'Dressing Gown', 'Drag Queens Trial', and 'Emotionalists'. Gilbert has received several awards for his contributions to theatre, including the Dora Mavor Moore Award and the Pauline McGibbon Award. He is also an accomplished author with seven novels published, including 'Guilty' and 'Sad Old Faggot', alongside various poetry collections and non-fiction works such as 'Shakespeare Science: Poetry World'. Gilbert obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, where he focused on male femininity and the works of Noel Coward. He also launched the Shakespeare Experiment, which explores gender constructs in the context of Shakespearean performance. As a fellow at the University of Toronto's Sexual Diversity Studies Program, he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on subjects including dramaturgy, the queer feminine style, and theatrical cross-dressing.
